On Wednesday, July 13, 2016, HOC announced the winners of the 2016 Tony S. Davis Memorial Scholarship Awards. The seven award recipients were selected based on their academic achievements and contributions to the community.

HOC established this scholarship award in memory of former staff member Tony S. Davis. He volunteered extensively in the community to improve the lives of residents and served as a role model to children. The scholarship winners are following in his footsteps and making a difference in their community.

HOC is proud to announce the award recipients:

Qurratulain Shafiq graduated from Northwest High School in Germantown with a 4.35 GPA. Qurratulain has participated in several extracurricular activities including: National Honor Society, Science Honor Society, Rho Kappa Honor Society, Think Pink, Muslim Student Association, South Asian Association, Ecology Club, Academy of Biotechnology, Pre-Med Society Club and the American Red Cross. Qurratulain credits her parents’ hard work for inspiring her academic and community success. She plans to attend the University of Maryland, Baltimore County this fall. HOC is honored to award her with a scholarship of $3,000.

Maryamawit Abate graduated from Springbrook High School in Silver Spring with a 4.35 GPA. Maryamawit founded her school’s first Sign Language Club. She also participated in activities with the National Honor Society, Chemistry Club and the Student Government Association. She completed 260 hours of community service and plans to attend Montgomery College in the fall. Maryamawit received a scholarship award in the amount of $1,500.

Shantavia Craigg graduated from John F. Kennedy High School in Silver Spring with a GPA of 4.09. During high school, she participated in several extracurricular activities including Key Club, Minority Scholars Program, Crittenton Services of Greater Washington, Student Government Association and the Leadership Training Institute. Shantavia has also held part-time employment at Wheaton Ice Arena, the Department of Agriculture and The Department of Health and Human Services. Shantavia completed 262 hours of community service and plans to attend Northeastern University in the fall. Shantavia received a scholarship award in the amount of $1,500.

Dagmawi Assefa graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring with a GPA of 3.9. During high school, he was a member of the Key Club, Student Council and the Ethiopian Club. Dagmawi completed 199 hours of community service. He will also be attending the University of Maryland College Park this fall. HOC is honored to award him a scholarship in the amount of $1,000.

Amal Hasaan graduated from John F. Kennedy High School in Silver Spring with a GPA of 3.8. She is very active in the community and has participated in activities with the Muslim Interscholastic Tournament, the Islamic Circle of North America, Pivot Physical Therapy and the Montgomery County Homeless Shelter. Amal completed 75 hours of community service. She plans to attend the University of Maryland, College Park this fall. HOC is honored to award her a scholarship in the amount of $1,000.

Taweh Lizear-Scott graduated from Damascus High School with a 3.15 GPA. Throughout high school, he participated in football, soccer and volleyball. He was also a member of the Acts of Random Kindness Club. Taweh completed 115 hours of community service while working part time at Butler’s Orchard and T.W. Perry. He plans to attend Salisbury University this fall. HOC is honored to award him a scholarship in the amount of $1,000.

Mabintou Outtara graduated from Springbrook High School in Silver Spring with a 3.6 GPA. Throughout high school, she participated in extracurricular activities such as: American Sign Language Club, Collegiate Directions, Softball and the school play. She also works part time at Habitat for Humanity. Mabintou completed 180 hours of community service and plans to attend Towson University in the fall. She received a scholarship award in the amount of $1,000.
