Job Description:

This is a professional position that provides a range of services to the Office of Public Affairs & Communications in the areas of public information/communications, public relations, social and traditional media, and marketing.  Develops and executes legislative, public affairs, communications, marketing, as well as traditional and social media related initiatives in support of HOC’s mission.

Work in this class requires knowledge in the area of strategic communications, both verbal and written. Duties include overseeing the development and implementation of social media activities including Facebook, Twitter and the Executive Director’s blog; developing/ overseeing the development of written and visual materials including reports, presentations, talking points, legislative testimony, speeches, papers and videos relating to HOC’s activities;  ensuring the development and distribution of appropriate materials to the general public and specific constituencies; develop and coordinate marketing for HOC programs and properties in cooperation with HOC staff; to produce news releases and other media relations materials; respond to routine media requests; produce feature articles and place them appropriately. The employee independently works on standard or fundamental duties and receives limited supervision. Most work will be evaluated by the supervisor to determine if the contents are appropriate and in the best interest of HOC.  Guidelines are provided in the form of journalism/public relations practices and procedures, established policies of HOC, and prior situations. Work involves an assortment of different tasks, which will have a direct impact on the operation of the Public Affairs & Communications Office. The work requires direct supervision of Public Information Specialists and other staff (e.g., Writer, Creative Team, and Webmaster). In performing the duties, the employee is required to investigate research, analyze and make recommendations to leadership based on the information and data compiled.

Preferred Skills:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing or a related field.   Advanced Degree, preferred.
  • Four years of experience in the communications field. Knowledge of affordable housing industry preferred.
  • Knowledge of Housing Program regulations, legislative and industry issues, community concerns, county laws (a plus).
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Desktop Publishing (a plus).
  • Project Management software experience (e.g., Trello, Asana, Monday.com) preferred.
  • Ability to write news releases, reports, speeches, talking points, etc.
  • Knowledge of publication and design process
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills including ability to speak in public.
  • Ability to interact with people of varied backgrounds.
